1. World’s largest rotating tram cars: The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway features rotating passenger cabins that provide spectacular 360-degree views during the ride.
2. A dramatic elevation change: The tram climbs approximately 5,873 feet, transporting passengers from the desert floor into the San Jacinto Mountains.
3. Opened in 1963: The tramway officially opened on September 14, 1963, following years of planning and challenging construction.
4. A 10-minute adventure: The approximately 2.5-mile journey takes about 10 minutes each way, traveling over the rugged cliffs and wilderness of Chino Canyon.
5. Two completely different climates: Visitors can experience hot desert temperatures at the Valley Station and much cooler alpine conditions at the Mountain Station. The temperature difference can exceed 30°F.
6. The Mountain Station sits at 8,516 feet: The upper terminal provides breathtaking views of the Coachella Valley and access to Mount San Jacinto State Park.
7. Over 50 miles of hiking trails: At the top, visitors can explore alpine forests, mountain meadows, and scenic overlooks. During winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are popular activities.
8. An incredible engineering achievement: Construction required approximately 23,000 helicopter flights to transport workers and materials. Four of the five support towers were erected using helicopters.
9. The rotating cars arrived in 2000: Although the tramway opened in 1963, its famous rotating cabins were installed during a modernization project. Each car carries approximately 80 passengers and rotates slowly during the ascent.
